What to Check When Choosing Brass Outlets

Each set here is a complete assembly: a UL listed receptacle behind a solid brass wall plate, supplied with matching screws. Brass has always been used inside outlets because it conducts reliably and resists corrosion at the contact points. What changes with these is that the face on the wall carries the same material as the rest of the hardware in the room rather than defaulting to white plastic. Before ordering, work through the circuit itself.

  • Format: Standard duplex for general rooms, GFCI where the code requires protection, and USB-C or USB-A plus USB-C where a nightstand or kitchen counter is doing the charging.

  • 15A or 20A: 15A is standard for most residential rooms. A 15A duplex receptacle can sit on a 20A circuit provided it is not the only receptacle on it, but a 20A receptacle cannot go on a 15A circuit. Kitchens and bathrooms need 20A circuits.

  • Where GFCI is required: The NEC calls for GFCI protection in wet and damp locations, which covers kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages and outdoor points.

  • Tamper resistance: New and renovated residential work requires tamper resistant receptacles. The spring loaded shutters stay closed unless both slots are pressed evenly.

  • Grounding: A metal plate needs proper metal to metal contact with the device yoke, and the box has to be grounded. Confirm this before fitting any metal wall hardware.

  • Finish and gang count: Count the devices in the existing box, then choose lacquered for a tone that stays put or unlacquered for a finish that darkens with handling.

Matching Outlets, Switches and Cabinet Hardware

Outlets are the most numerous fitting on a wall and usually the last one anyone thinks about, which is why a room with brass switches and plastic sockets never quite settles. Commonly Asked Questions

Do I need a 15 amp or 20 amp brass outlet?

Match the receptacle to the circuit, not the other way around. A 15A receptacle works on a 15A or 20A circuit, as long as it is not the only receptacle on a 20A branch. A 20A receptacle must not be installed on a 15A circuit. Kitchens and bathrooms are required to run on 20A circuits, though the individual receptacles on them can still be 15A.

Where does the code require a GFCI outlet?

In wet and damp locations. That means kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages and outdoor receptacles. GFCI is also a recognised way to add protection in older homes with no ground wire at the box, provided the outlet is labelled as having no equipment ground.

Are these outlets tamper resistant?

Yes. The receptacles are tamper resistant, which the NEC requires for new and renovated residential installations. Internal spring loaded shutters block the slots unless even pressure is applied to both sides, so a single object pushed into one slot cannot make contact.

Is a metal plate on a brass electrical outlet safe?

Yes, on a properly grounded box. Metal wall plates rely on continuity between the plate, the device yoke and the box, so the box must be grounded and the contact clean. Metal plates should not be used on ungrounded circuits. If the existing wiring is old or unlabelled, have an electrician confirm it.

Will a brass outlet tarnish over time?

Unlacquered and antique finishes will, and they are meant to. They darken with handling, faster in kitchens and bathrooms where humidity speeds it up. Lacquered finishes hold their tone. To clean either, wipe with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid abrasive pads, metal polishes and ammonia based cleaners.
